Rail Europe is hiring an experienced front-end developer to help us build beautiful, thoughtful and easy-to-use web sites and mobile apps.

Rail Europe represents more than 50 European train companies and is a one-stop shop for travel planning and booking.  The leading distributor of European rail products, Rail Europe offers a wide range of rail passes, train tickets and sightseeing activities. An essential part of the vacation planning process, the company’s website offers a user-friendly booking engine, knowledgeable experts, online rail pass finder, virtual tours, interactive maps and much more.  Rail Europe provides a cost and time-effective and seamless travel experience by enabling travelers to plan and book their European travel details in advance and with ease. 

We have teams of software developers in the US and Europe to support our digital platforms. Teams are made up of front-end and back-end developers:

  • Front-end developers deliver web and mobile experiences using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP based on user/customer requirements and visual designs.   They also consume APIs provided by back-end teams or interface with content management systems.
  • Back-end developers integrate front-end components with dynamic content and business logic, and provide APIs for front-end teams to consume.

About You

You’ll be driven by wanting to understand our customers’ needs and behavior, and passionate about delivering tools that help our customers research and book their journeys and travel with confidence. You’ll have a deep desire to craft beautiful and highly-useable interfaces that delight diverse users from our markets around the world, and be motivated to measure their performance.

Comfortable working in an international environment, you’ll receive direction from the web development manager in Paris. Using requirements/visual designs, and collaborating daily with development and business teams in the US and Europe, you’ll apply strong technical skills in HTML/CSS/JavaScript, PHP (for our websites) and AngularJS (or our hybrid mobile applications) to build, test, document and deliver elegant, high-performance interfaces that consume REST and RPC APIs and deliver CMS content.

Responsibilities

  • Implement new web and mobile interfaces in HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP based on end-user requirements and related wireframes and visual designs.
  • Maintain and optimize front-end code for current web platforms.
  • Work with backend developers to integrate front-end components with content management systems and various APIs while maintaining low latency and SEO/SEM friendliness.
  • Write unit tests and automated integration tests for front-end code.
  • Support the setup and execution of multivariate tests on front-end components.
  • Participate in regular support and bug fixing process.
  • Provide input on best practices to be used for optimal performance, quality, and maintainability.
  • Prepare technical documentation for front-end components where needed.

Requirements (Skills, Experience, Education)

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education/work experience in any of the following fields: computer science, information systems, engineering, or business.
Technical Qualifications:
  • 3+ years’ experience in the following technologies:
    • HTML5 and CSS3 (including SASS/LESS preprocessors)
    • JavaScript
    • JQuery
    • PHP development for transactional websites – experience with multilingual/internationalized applications preferred.
  • 1+ years’ experience in the following technologies:
    • CMS or E-learning platforms – Drupal, WordPress or SPIP experience preferred.
    • Consuming SOAP/XML-RPC or REST APIs.
    • Templating languages: JSP, Smarty, etc.
    • AngularJS
    • Bootstrap
    • SQL
Experience in any of the following technologies is a plus:
  • GitHub
  • A/B testing platforms
  • Web test automation frameworks and tools
  • Hybrid mobile app development using PhoneGap
Other Skills:
  • Delivery of at least one major project utilizing responsive design – please provide a portfolio sample with your application.
  • Curiosity and willingness to ask questions and suggest solutions to optimize user experience.
  • Familiarity with UI/UX principles and a strong desire to create beautiful visual experiences.
  • Desire to gain a deep understanding of our customer’s behavior and how they interact with our digital properties.
  • Ability to clearly communicate work progress and risks/issues that may impact implementation or user/customer experience.
  • Track record of independent skill development, staying current with industry trends, and incorporation of new tools and methods in daily assignments.
  • Prior experience working with remote teams across several time zones and physical locations (international environments preferred).
